MY ROLE.

Technical Product Manager

Worked alongside Learn to Win’s founders, I led a team of four that spanned timezones, from product ideation to MVP release and ongoing enhancements. On a daily basis, I facilitated Learn to Win’s product vision by setting the right technical targets for our product team and managing the development pipeline.

I defined each version release’s product features, requirements and compiled detailed user stories for the design and engineering team. I worked closely with our product designer to constantly enhance user experience, often communicating ideas directly by creating wireframes. I was also involved in AWS infrastructure architecture improvements to enhance user experience and manage AWS costs.

Learn to Win is the fastest growing product I have led thus far; it went from ideation to being a multi-million company in a span of two years of my involvement. Since passing off my responsibilities over to Learn to Win’s internal dev department in Nov 2019, they have continued to expand beyond the athletic education space and into defense and enterprises.

To bring Learn to Win’s vision to life, we built three platforms to provide a seamless experience for different user types.

Platform 1: iOS application for players

Allows players to receive lessons and quizzes created by their coaches, wherever they are. Each user has a personal profile and performance tracker to keep the user learning at his/her own pace.

Platform 2: Web application for coaches

Easy to use platform for coaches to build and edit lessons and quizzes for their players. Coaches can track easily track individual players’ learning progress and identify knowledge gaps.

Platform 3: Web application for Learn to Win admins

For Learn to Win admins to monitor all platforms’ usages and provide customer support when needed.

KEY TAKEAWAY.

Always build products with sustainability and expansion in mind.

Learn to Win was the quickest growing product from my early Product Management career, it highlighted the importance of making sure my product’s infrastructure is capable of scaling with my client’s company.

A few months into MVP release, L2W had a number of major teams, such as UMich Football and Under Armour All-America Games, active on the platform, but the applications would have random downtimes. I worked with my team to understand the situation and we found out we were storing user uploaded contents to EBS (Elastic Block Storage) instead of AWS S3 (Simple Storage Service). This means that our applications would be unavailable as soon as EBS is maxed out and the quickest solution would be to add additional EBS storage when we are close to the limit. However, it’s almost impossible for us to constantly monitor available storage level and considering L2W is a content heavy platform, I soon realized we need a better plan moving forward.

This motivated me to quickly familiarize myself with AWS offerings and how to build sustainable infrastructures. Since then, I’ve participated more heavily in infrastructure design for every application I manage. This ranges from identifying AWS services that allows us to easily scale, to making sure the database structure is capable of intaking new data types if needed.
